SUN PICNIC COLLECTION

SUN PICNIC FILM

A COLLECTION OF VISUALS, SHOWCASING THE TRANSFORMATIVE PROCESS THESE GARMENTS HAVE EXPERIENCED,

RESULTING IN A WEARABLE MOMENT IN TIME.

For SUN PICNIC we explored the idea of printing garments with time, sculpting a new reality based in the present. The act of doing this created a collection of garments that reflects the true wearer in that moment. Because time is a shared concept, the video presentation allows the audience to participate in the process.

In this presentation the viewer gets to experience the garments as they transform into their final form. The overall process begins with the garments painted with a photosensitive emulsion. When exposed to sun, the initial yellow color gradually transitions to a green, blue and then dark blue/ grey color, before the printing process is solidified by ceremonially submerging into the lake water, resulting in the vibrancy of the cyanotype. Throughout this collection we experimented with a few variations of this printing method. The first concept explores printing through wear.

This method is a performative act, which utilizes the models form as they wear the garments pre-saturated in the photosensitive emulsion, resulting in frozen moments in time. The print is contingent upon how the garment is worn and which areas of the garment are exposed to the sun. The stacking and creases printed transforms the garment into a sculpture created by the human form utilizing the sun and time.

The second process dives into creating prints on the garments through biophilic informed design. By utilizing botanicals we sought to connect both the garments and the wearer with the natural world through the delicate silhouettes the botanicals impress upon the garment.

For the third method we utilized a performative art technique of using human form to create prints, leaving a negative space print of the body onto the piece.

All of these methods freeze the art-informed actions and embed them into the garments, bringing a true connection of the individual wearer, with the garment they are featured in. The focus was to bring the models and the natural world into the forefront of the creative process.

The final result is a collection of unique 1 of 1 pieces, allowing others to access these experiences and wear these moments and bodies frozen in time.
